1952–1977

From a Currency Fund to a Service Co-operative Sangham

This institution began work in 1952 under the name Vekalam Multi-purpose United Currency Fund, and passed through the stages of Vekalam United Currency Sangham and Vekalam (Thondiyil) Service Co-operative Sangham. In these early years it gave farmers seed, fertiliser and small-scale agricultural loans.

1977

Renamed Thondiyil Service Co-operative Bank

From 1977 the institution has operated under its present name, Thondiyil Service Co-operative Bank.

Details pending. The exact milestones of the years between 1977 and today — when each branch opened, and when the ATM, the auditorium, Garden Fresh, Thanal and the ICU ambulance service began — have not yet been received from the bank. No date has been guessed at — confirmed details will be added here as soon as the bank office supplies them.

Today

Head Office and Two Branches

The bank works today from its Head Office at Thondiyil, Peravoor — an air-conditioned building with the bank’s own ATM & CDM counter on site — together with the Nedumpoyil Branch and the Poolakkutty Branch, which has been rebuilt with modern facilities.

Alongside everyday banking, the bank runs an air-conditioned auditorium available to the public at low cost, the Garden Fresh Mini Super Market, the Garden Fresh Food Processing Centre, Thanal Palliative Care and an ICU ambulance service. A locker facility and 24×7 CCTV surveillance are also in place.

The bank now lends to the agricultural sector and to JLG–Kudumbashree enterprises according to their project costs — a growth from its early years, when it gave farmers seed, fertiliser and small-scale agricultural loans.
